On a personal note, April Fools is a special day to me. While SWAK’s official birthday is in March (when we started our little design studio in an extra bedroom of our house), a few years later on April Fools Day we decided to open to the public and expand into a tiny yarn shop. You’d have to be a fool to quit working as a CPA to sell yarn! But fool that I am, I never envisioned that we’d grow into the legendary shop, make that TWO shops that we are today. We are now entering our 17th year in business, and are grateful & excited to still be serving you & your yarn needs.

It was on April Fools Day a year later that I met Keith too. It was on a blind date, set up by his step-mom Linda who knew me from working at the post office. We’re daily visitors with all of the mail orders that we ship. If I hadn’t opened our first little store we’d never met. His sister saw me out in the yard one day (which is funny since I don’t do outdoors, and I still don’t know why I was out there), and tipped him off. He’s glad that Linda knew me, because plan B was to come in and ask me to knit something for him and that might have backfired a bit.

So I hope you enjoy our goofy little sale. We had an ordering snafu a few years back with the purple Fun Fur, and it has become a bit of a joke. Even with this awesome special, I have a feeling we’re still going to have a small mountain of it left. Maybe we should give it a name and keep it as a pet.

    Happy April Fools Day everyone!

    Unique findings

    knitnwalk1.jpg
knitnwalk.jpgThe cutest little bags arrived this week - it’s called the Knit ‘n Walk and you hang it on your wrist so you can, well so you can knit and walk (duh!). Each bag is unique so they come in a wide assortment of prints & colors. You can find these at both SWAK locations. Due to the uniqueness of the bags we don’t have them online, but if you live far away give us a shout and we can describe our current selection to you. $22

knittybits.jpgWe also nabbed a bunch of really cool hand-dyed sock yarns from an indie dyer out of Kansas. The Knitty Bits yarns are absolutely gorgeous, and can be found at our Guthrie location. Each colorway is unique. $24/430 yds.

We have also been busy getting things organized for the Knit Out in May. If you’ve been out of the loop and are wondering what all of the hullabaloo is about, well each spring we have 3 of the top names in knitting along with knitters from across the United States & Canada in Guthrie for a weekend of knitting fun.

    retreat_wendy.jpgJoining us May 15-17 will be -

Wendy Johnson - her wendyknits blog is one of the hottest knitting sites, and she is the reigning queen of toe up socks. Her second book, Socks from the Toe Up goes on sale April 14 and she will be here in person giving workshops and signing books.

retreat_mags.jpgMags Kandis - one of my favorite knitting people! I have known Mags for years and she is so awesome. I love her designs, love her style, love her “you can do it too” attitude toward design, and think you will love her too. She was the original designer and founder of Mission Falls and author of the book Folk Style.

retreat_joan.jpgJoan Schrouder - dominatrix of all technical knitterly things on the internet. From the Knit List, to KnitU, and now Ravelry you will find Joan tackling problems, answering technical questions, and assisting many a wayward knitter. She is a seasoned instructor with a vast knowledge of all things knit.

So you might be wondering if it is too late to sign up . . . and no it’s not. Some of the classes are filling up but we should be able to accommodate most requests. Hotel rooms are at a premium, and we only have a few left. It will be difficult to find extra rooms this year. They are making a major movie that is HQ in Guthrie, and they are already nipping at my heels wanting some of my rooms. I won’t be able to hold them off much longer, so the one or two I have left may have to be let go soon.

You might also be wondering if you can just take one class rather than sign up for the entire weekend, and the answer is YES! Go to our website for complete information including classes, packages, pricing, and you can even register online.

If you’ve already signed up and are wondering when you’ll get your class homework & supply lists, the answer is we are mailing them out next week. If you are getting antsy, you can also download most of this information online. Your personal registration information and balance due will be in the mailing. If you do not receive it by April 10 give us a shout.

hollywood.jpgYes, Hollywood is in Guthrie preparing to begin the filiming of The Killer Inside Me. It is based on a crime novel from 1952 about a deranged psycho killer sheriff. We never get any comedies or romance novels - just the scary ones. Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, and Kate Hudson are starring in the movie that will be filmed in various places throughout Oklahoma, but the majority of the film will be made in Guthrie. We’ve had lots of directors and staff through our building looking for housing, offices, places to film. I’d love to tell you that one of the starlets just rented my upstairs apartment, but it’s just a local person so don’t hang out and stalk them please. If we have any famous people sightings, I’ll be sure to let you know!

PS-You all aren’t the chattiest group of readers, but if you do decide to get chatty and comment on any of our posts we’d love to hear from you. I get dozens of comments each day . . . all spam, and would like to hear about more than male enhancement pills. To reduce some of this lovely spam, I am closing comments on older posts. So if you try to comment on something more than a few months old, please know that it’s not that we don’t want to hear your comment, I’m just trying to cut down on weird spam.
