Come and join us this summer for a mini-retreat with designer Yumiko Alexander. Originally from Japan, Yumiko relocated to the US in her late twenties and established DanDoh, a distinctive collection of Japanese plant-based fiber yarns. Inspired by her Japanese heritage, her design aesthetic showcases simple silhouettes with rich textures and unique stitch patterns.

Discover the Joy of Plant-Based Fibers/DanDoh Yarn Tasting
Immerse yourself in the world of plant fibers to explore their unique characteristics. Discover how knitting with plant fiber differs from using animal fiber, creating a light and airy fabric with more drape. Experience an exclusive DanDoh yarn tasting as you learn about the unique qualities of Yumiko's yarns and have fun knitting with them.

Friday, July 12 (10 am to 5 pm)

A full day filled with three workshops and a delicious catered lunch!

How to Seam Open Fabric
Seaming adds structure to the project, particularly for open fabric. Seaming can be tricky, but when you learn the correct method, you will see how easy it is to make perfect seams. Yumiko will demonstrate how to seam row and stitch edges, and you will have the opportunity to practice and improve your seaming skills.

Getting Gauge with Plant Fiber
This discussion on the importance of gauge will include how to properly create a swatch with plant fiber, the importance of blocking, and the best way to block plant fiber yarn.

How to Substitute Plant Fiber
Have you discovered the perfect pattern for your favorite linen or cotton yarn, only to realize it's designed for wool? Transitioning from wool to linen or cotton isn't as simple as just switching yarn. Linen and cotton have unique characteristics compared to wool, which can significantly affect the outcome of your project. Explore how to adapt patterns intended for animal fiber yarn to suit plant fibers.

How I Became a Knitwear Designer/Garment Styling

Yumiko kicks off the day with a meet-and-greet, sharing her journey of becoming a knitwear designer. She will share tips she has learned over the years, how she evolved from designing with heavy wool to plant fibers, and what the future may hold.

The event will wrap up with a closer look at the DanDoh trunk show, as Yumiko shares tips for styling rectangular and boxy garments. Enjoy wearing your finished DanDoh creation as much as the knitting process!
